i’m going to write a book and give little to no physical descriptions on any of the characters at all and then hopefully my book will become a film and i can watch and laugh at everyone who is arguing over what race my characters are
*Our* fandom isn’t arguing, but you know. She is very ambiguous.
I was re-reading the Underland books this summer and thinking about the whole controversy over Rue. I realized that nearly all of Suzanne Collins’ characters are racially ambiguous (besides a few—Luxa is white, Rue is black). So, I don’t think it’s really cut-and-dried what race Gregor and his family are, but a few hints here and there have led me to believe that it’s more likely they’re black. At one point, Boots’ skin is described as “light brown.” At another part, the rats say “mark you his shade.” They recognize the color of Gregor’s skin and recognize that it connects him to his dad. Neither says 100% that they are black—light brown could describe a tan-looking white person, and the rats could have been referring to his shade as an Overlander (but I’m inclined to think it was something more, because it also led them to his dad). Taken together, though, it makes me think they’re black.

Tembi Locke as Grace, Gregor’s mom
All right, so this is another cop-out. I kept thinking she was perfect as Gregor’s mom… and then I realized that her character on Eureka is also named Grace. So maybe this is partly/mostly the result of an unconscious association, but I still think she’s a fantastic actor and completely adorable.
Also I would just like to add that I would LOVE submissions for these! Even if I or somebody else has already cast someone, feel free to submit! :)

I’ll start! In case it isn’t obvious, this is Boots. This is probably the easiest one, because two-year-olds don’t really have acting careers (as far as I know…?) so I can basically just pick whoever I think looks right. Actually, if you know of a two-year-old with an acting career, I want to know about this. I even think the shirt she’s wearing is very Boots. Boots loves flutterflies.
I’m fairly certain that The Underland Chronicles will never become a movie (which is a misfortune for the world at large) but that won’t stop me from trying to fancast it. Nope, the only thing that will stop me is a lack of dedication/time/inspiration.
SO I would really love for people to submit their own fancasting! This can be one or many characters. I would also love to see people’s ideas for the voices behind some of the non-human characters. SUBMIT!! :)
(I will post everything I get. Maybe later on we can vote on our official fancast or something… Is an official fancast even a thing?)
Seriously, if you’ve read The Hunger Games, you need to read Suzanne Collins’ other series, the Underland Chronicles.
